Dear Competitors,
One month ago already, the route of the 43rd edition of the Dakar was disclosed and the registrations opened to “keep on exploring the deserts of Saudi Arabia on a 100% new route!”
Many of you showed us their interest and motivation while raising some concerns about the organization of the event and the characteristics of the route.
To answer to all your interrogations, we interviewed David Castera, director of the Dakar:
Hello David, how do you see the organization of the next Dakar?
“The organization is going very well. Obviously, we could not go in the field but everything is ready, even more so than usual. Final Recce will begin starting from September.
Concerning the exceptional situation we are in, the Dakar will adapt to COVID measures and strictly respect every directives imposed by the sanitary authorities. The Saudi government and A.S.O are doing everything to ensure the smooth running of the event which is not threatened by the current events. The Dakar, as always will adapt, and will take place”
When you mention a more technical route, what do you mean exactly?
“For Dakar 2021 we decided to recreate the scheme of the first five stages of Dakar 2020. Let me explain: we want to get rid of every section that could be too fast and replacing them by more technical, narrower and slower ones. But not as much as in trial, it’s absolutely not the objective…! And we will obviously not forget the navigation which will be primordial in the continuity of what was done last January.
Can you give the competitors a first insight of what you’re preparing?
“This Dakar will be very diverse with daily combinations of Rally-raid essentials such as sand, dunes, technics and navigation… A beautiful sport battle is waiting for them with almost 5 000km of special stages”
Thank you David for all this information and let’s meet again soon for new updates, especially after your Recce.
“Stay tuned for more”
