Part of the 2023 and 2024 W2RC, the Desafio Ruta 40 is set to make its return in May 2026. The thirteenth edition of the round will take place from 24 to 29 May. 
 
Entries to the event have been open since December 1st.

The route of the thirteenth edition of the Desafío Ruta 40 will form a loop around San Juan. The capital of the province of the same name will host the start and finish of the event, after more than 2700 kilometres, including 1669 kilometres of selective sections.
 
On the evening of stage 2, the rally will stop in San Rafael (Mendoza province) for the first time in 10 years. Located at the foot of the Andes, close to the border with Chile, San Rafael will also host the next bivouac at the end of the toughest stage of the 2026 edition. The rally will then return to San Juan for the last two days of the event.
 
The diversity of the terrain will be the highlight of these five days of racing, with sand playing an important role. Crossing the grey dunes of Nihuil, visited for the first time in nine years by Desafío Ruta 40, will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the race.

23 May 2026 :  Administrative checks and scrutineering, and private tests
24 May 2026 : Administrative checks and scrutineering, followed by the shakedown and the ceremonial start
25 May 2026 : Stage 1 - San Juan > San Juan (SS: 341km, Liaison: 135km)
26 May 2026 : Stage 2 - San Juan > San Rafael (SS: 295km, Liaison: 340km)
27 May 2026 : Stage 3 - San Rafael > San Rafael (SS: 435km, Liaison: 200km)
28 May 2026 : Stage 4 - San Rafael > San Juan (SS: 310km, Liaison: 275km)
29 May 2026 : Stage 5 - San Juan > San Juan (SS: 288km, Liaison: 155km)

The Desafío Ruta 40 is the third Road to Dakar event of the 2026 season.
 
This event is an opportunity, before the Dakar 2027, to gain experience in driving/riding and race management in an event formatted to the same organisational standards. Depending on your category, the event will also enable you to potentially qualify or even win an entry for the Dakar 2027: 
  • Moto competitors : The Desafío Ruta 40 is one of the best opportunities to score points (12) before the selection of candidates for the Dakar 2027 in July 2026. You need to finish the race to score these 12 points. 
  • SSV competitors: you can validate you entry to the Dakar 2027 by winning the Road to Dakar challenge.
